What is FedEx Ground Economy?

FedEx Ground Economy (formerly known as FedEx SmartPost) is one of the most cost-effective options for small—and medium-sized businesses shipping small products.

E-commerce merchants can ship packages weighing up to 70 pounds and measuring up to 130 inches in length plus girth with FedEx Ground Economy. Regarding transit times, this particular service level usually takes packages 2-7 business days to arrive at customers' doorsteps.

FedEx Ground Economy can be a great choice for shipping low-value, low-weight, and non-urgent orders. Products such as apparel, accessories, toys, games, or any product weighing between 1 and 10 pounds would be ideal for this service level.

Most FedEx Ground Economy packages are delivered by FedEx Ground; however, certain destinations receive delivery via the United States Postal Service (USPS).

IMPORTANT: This service level is provided by FedEx, and all parcels must be dropped off exclusively at an authorized FedEx drop-off location to initiate their journey. Any parcels left directly with USPS may be subject to disposal, and liability coverage will be voided.

Note: Multi-Shipment features is not available for FedEx Ground Economy shipments.

What are the benefits of FedEx Ground Economy?

  • Reliable, cost-effective way to ship low-weight packages to US Residential customers
  • 100% discount on fuel surcharges
  • 100% discount on residential surcharges
  • Ability to use your own custom shipping boxes
  • Monday through Sunday* shipping (*Sunday deliveries not available to all areas)
  • 24-hour visibility for packages with FedEx Tracking
  • Liability coverage up to $100 when in the possession of FedEx

Why can't I see rates for FedEx Ground Economy?

Please note there is a minimum dimension requirement for FedEx Ground Economy:

  • 6 x 4 x 1 inches (L x W x H)

If the minimum dimension requirement is not met, you will not see rates for this service level.

What are FedEx Ground Returns?

FedEx Ground Returns is an affordable and speedy 1-5 day delivery option that allows you to reduce customer friction, receive products back fast, process customer refunds quickly, save on return shipping costs, and streamline your process.

Please note that this service is only available for non-residential addresses. Returns requested for residential shipments incur a $5.50 surcharge.

To use FedEx Ground Returns:

  • Select FedEx Ground when creating a label and choose Create a return label under package options.

A FedEx Ground Returns label will automatically be generated and printed alongside your shipping label. Include this return label inside the package to make returns hassle-free for your customers. You won’t be charged for the return until a FedEx rep scans the return label.

Even if you've already shipped a package using a different service level, you can still print a FedEx Ground Returns label to keep your return costs low.
