Shippo Automation Rules FAQs

Automation rules allow you to specify a set of order conditions and fulfillment actions to apply to a group of orders automatically. Automation rules are a great time saver for tasks that are repeatable and predictable within your fulfillment workflow.

In this article, you will find the most common question regarding Automations!

What automation rules are available in Shippo?

With Shippo’s Automation Rules, you can automatically…

  • Assign Package Templates
  • Assign Carrier Service Levels
  • Assign the Sender Address
  • Assign Tags

According to an order’s...

  • Item Name
  • Item SKU
  • Total Item Quantity
  • Order Weight
  • Shipping Destination: Domestic/ International
  • Shipping Destination: State/ Province (U.S. & Canada)
  • Shipping Destination: Zip Code (U.S. & Canada)

How many automation rules can apply to an order?

Multiple rules can apply to an order; however, only one of the same action will apply. For example, an order may have a package assigned to it through one rule and a carrier service assigned to it through a different rule, or both through the same rule.

In contrast, an order cannot have two of the same actions applied to it. For example, an order cannot have two package templates assigned to it. If an order meets the conditions of two different rules applying two different package templates, the package template listed first in the Automation Rules list is what will be applied to the order.

In what order will my automation rules apply?

Automation Rules process in order from top to bottom and may be reordered by clicking and dragging rules into the desired arrangement. The arrangement of your automation rules matters most when an order meets the conditions for two rules with the same action but different selections (e.g. apply package template A and apply package template B). If an order meets the conditions of two different rules applying two different package templates, the package template listed first in the Automation Rules list is what will be applied to the order.

How do I know if an automation rule has applied to an order?

When an automation rule is applied to an order, Shippo notates this change at the top of the order’s detail page
