Understanding UPS Ground Saver: How It Works and Where to Drop Off

What Is UPS Ground Saver?

UPS Ground Saver is an economical domestic shipping service built for lightweight, non-urgent packages. It combines the UPS transportation network with final-mile delivery support when applicable.

With this service:

  • Packages travel through the UPS network first.
  • In some cases, UPS coordinates final delivery routing that references USPS tracking.
  • Transit times typically run longer than standard UPS Ground, but the service is more cost-effective.

What does a UPS Ground Saver label look like?

A UPS Ground Saver label will:

  • Display a primary UPS tracking number (starting with "1Z").
  • Often show a secondary USPS tracking number printed toward the bottom of the label.

Note: The USPS tracking number on the label is part of the service's routing process. It doesn't mean you should drop the package off at USPS.

UPS Ground Saver drop-off requirements

UPS Ground Saver shipments must go directly to UPS. Only drop off packages at an authorized UPS location, such as:

  • UPS Store
  • UPS Access Point
  • UPS Drop Box
  • Any official UPS facility
Note: If you drop off a UPS Ground Saver package anywhere other than an authorized UPS location, including USPS facilities, the shipment may get disposed of and considered improperly tendered.

Important: don't hand UPS Ground Saver packages to USPS

When you purchase a UPS Ground Saver label, you may notice a USPS tracking number printed at the bottom. That's part of the service's routing process, not a sign that the package should go to USPS.

UPS Ground Saver packages must always go to UPS first. Even with a USPS tracking number on the label, don't drop the package at a USPS location. Doing so can result in:

  • The package being disposed of
  • Loss of the shipment
  • Voided carrier liability
  • Loss of insurance coverage

Insurance and liability implications

If a UPS Ground Saver package goes directly to USPS and gets disposed of, both carrier liability and insurance coverage may be voided.

Insurance coverage requires following the carrier's shipping terms and conditions at the time of shipment. If a package isn't properly handed off to UPS, it can fall outside coverage eligibility. Standard UPS carrier liability doesn't apply either, when a shipment isn't tendered according to UPS service requirements.

To protect your shipment and keep it eligible for coverage, always drop off UPS Ground Saver packages directly with UPS.
