Understanding UPS Ground Saver: How It Works and Where to Drop Off

What Is UPS Ground Saver?

UPS Ground Saver is an economical domestic shipping service designed for lightweight, non-urgent packages. It combines the UPS transportation network with final-mile delivery support when applicable.

With this service:

  • Packages are first transported within the UPS network

  • In some cases, UPS may coordinate final delivery routing that references USPS tracking

  • Transit times are typically longer than standard UPS Ground, but the service is more cost-effective

What Does a UPS Ground Saver Label Look Like?

A UPS Ground Saver label will:

  • Display a primary UPS tracking number (beginning with “1Z”)

  • Often show a secondary USPS tracking number printed toward the bottom of the label

Note: The USPS tracking number printed on the label is part of the service routing process. It does not mean the package should be dropped off at USPS.

UPS Ground Saver Drop-Off Requirements

UPS Ground Saver shipments must be tendered directly to UPS. Packages should only be dropped off at an authorized UPS location, such as:

  • UPS Store
  • UPS Access Point
  • UPS Drop Box
  • Any official UPS facility

Note: If a UPS Ground Saver package is dropped off anywhere other than an authorized UPS location, including USPS facilities, the shipment may be disposed of and considered improperly tendered.

Important: Do Not Hand UPS Ground Saver Packages to USPS

When you purchase a UPS Ground Saver label, you may notice a USPS tracking number printed on the bottom of the label. This is part of the service routing process and does not mean the package should be given directly to USPS.

UPS Ground Saver packages must always be handed to UPS first.

Even if a USPS tracking number appears on the label, do not drop the package at a USPS location. Doing so can result in:

  • The package being disposed of
  • Loss of shipment
  • Voided carrier liability
  • Loss of insurance coverage

Insurance and Liability Implications

If a UPS Ground Saver package is given directly to USPS and is subsequently disposed of, both carrier liability and insurance coverage may be voided.

Insurance coverage requires compliance with the transportation carrier’s shipping terms and conditions at the time of shipment. If the package is not properly tendered to UPS, it may fall outside of coverage eligibility.

Standard UPS carrier liability also does not apply in cases where a shipment is not tendered according to UPS service requirements.

To protect your shipment and ensure eligibility for coverage, always drop off UPS Ground Saver packages directly with UPS.
