Important: Upcoming FedEx API Changes (Effective 2026)
FedEx is transitioning to a new, more secure API system. As part of this migration, new field requirements and validation rules will apply when creating FedEx shipping labels through Shippo.
These changes may impact label generation if required information is missing or does not meet the updated criteria.
When Do These Changes Take Effect?
If you use your own FedEx account with Shippo:
These changes take effect as soon as your FedEx account is verified. If you use Shippo’s FedEx account:
These changes will apply starting January 13, 2026.
What You Need to Know Before Shipping
To avoid label creation errors, please review the following requirements:
Sender Phone Number (Now Required)
A valid phone number is required for the sender.
Phone numbers must be between 10 and 15 digits.
Labels created without a sender phone number will return an error.
Updated Name & Company Field Requirements
FedEx now enforces minimum and maximum character limits:
-
Name field:
Must be at least 3 characters
Cannot exceed 70 characters
-
Company field (optional):
If included, must be 3–35 characters
If these fields fall outside the allowed limits, label creation will fail.
What Happens If These Requirements Aren’t Met?
If required fields are missing or exceed character limits, FedEx will return an error and the label will not be created. This may occur even if shipments previously worked without these details.

Shippo will bill for any label creation fee (Starter plan users) or monthly plan fees (Pro and Premier plan users), and any optional insurance that you've purchased.
Existing FedEx Connections
FedEx requires four-factor authentication to be used on third-party sites like Shippo. Four-factor authentication provides a greater level of security for your personal account information.
FedEx accounts previously connected to Shippo used two-factor authentication. These account connections will need to be updated in Shippo with Contact Information and the FedEx Shipping Address to continue using FedEx.
To update your Existing Connection:
- Navigate to the Carriers Page in Shippo by the Settings tab and clicking Carriers in the left navigation panel.
- Click on the Edit link to the right of your FedEx connection.
- Your FedEx Account Number will already be pre-filled and the field will be grayed-out. Enter the remaining required information and click the Submit button:

Note: The address entered in Shippo must exactly match the one listed in your FedEx account |
- SmartPost Hub ID (if applicable)
FedEx Test Accounts
FedEx actually provides two separate sets of credentials for every account — one for testing (Development) and one for actual live labels (Production). Since Test credentials cannot be verified using FedEx's four-factor authentication, they cannot be added to Shippo at this time.
FedEx Account Verification FAQ (Effective 2026)
Why do I need to verify my FedEx account?
FedEx is retiring its current Web Services system and moving to a new system with enhanced security. To continue purchasing FedEx shipping labels through Shippo, you’ll need to verify your FedEx account in Shippo’s settings before March 31, 2026.
When can I complete the verification?
Verification will be available starting January 13, 2026. You’ll see a Verify Account button next to your connected FedEx account in your Shippo dashboard once it’s live.
What happens if I don’t verify by March 31, 2026?
After March 31, you won’t be able to create or purchase FedEx shipping labels in Shippo until your account is verified. All other carrier accounts will remain unaffected.
Will my negotiated FedEx rates or services change?
No — your existing rates and authorized FedEx services will remain exactly the same after verification. The process is only to confirm your account under FedEx’s new system.
What information will I need to verify my account?
You’ll be asked to verify your account in one of two ways:
Verification code validation: FedEx sends a code to your registered SMS, phone, or email.
Invoice validation: You’ll enter details from your most recent FedEx invoice (invoice number, date, amount, and currency).
I manage multiple FedEx accounts. Do I need to verify each one?
Yes. Each FedEx account connected to Shippo must be verified individually.
