Use Shopify with Shippo

If you run a Shopify store, it's probably the center of your operations. Connect it to Shippo and you can import orders, buy labels, sync fulfillment, and manage multiple store locations without leaving our app.

This guide covers connecting your store, creating labels, setting up automatic fulfillment, managing Shopify locations, handling multi-location orders, and troubleshooting.

Connect your Shopify store

Once you install the Shippo app in Shopify and link your store, your Shopify orders import automatically to your Shippo account, ready for you to create and buy labels.

  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Visit the Stores tab.
  • Click Shopify.
  • On the Connect store page, enter your Shopify store URL.
  • Click Continue.

Already have a store connected?

  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Visit the Stores tab.
  • Click Connect store.
  • From the sidebar, click Shopify.
  • On the Connect store page, enter your Shopify store URL.
  • Click Continue.

Your orders will start populating the Orders Page, marked with a store icon. Connected to multiple stores? You'll be able to tell at a glance which store each order came from.

Create a shipping label

When you create a shipping label for a Shopify order in Shippo, we can send the tracking number and fulfillment update back to Shopify automatically. First, enable Shopify sync and fulfillment settings on the Settings Page (Stores) in Shippo.

Enable automatic fulfillment

In Shopify, all of your inventory items need to be set to manual fulfillment.

  • Go to Settings > Stores in the left navigation of Shippo, then click Manage in the top toolbar.

Here's what you'll find:

  • Sync tracking numbers on Shopify: check this box to sync the tracking number back to Shopify when you buy a label, and to automatically mark all items in the order as fulfilled. The exception is if you've used partial order fulfillment.
  • Send Shopify notification to the customer: check this box to trigger your Shopify email template when the order is marked fulfilled. This only works if “Sync tracking numbers and mark orders as fulfilled in Shopify” is also checked. Prefer a Shippo email instead? Leave this unchecked and set up the Shippo notification.
  • Include POS orders from Shopify: by default, we exclude Shopify POS orders when importing. Check this box if you want POS orders to import along with the rest.
  • Click Save once you're done.

Shopify locations for shipping

Shopify merchants can set up multiple locations to manage inventory and fulfillment across warehouses. How many you can add depends on your Shopify plan. See the Shopify Help Center for more on this feature.

All active locations import automatically

This works for any Shopify merchant, on any plan level. You'll see your locations listed on the Sender Address page in Shippo.

Note: We don't import inactive locations.

Read-only addresses

Locations imported from Shopify are read-only in Shippo. Any changes need to happen in Shopify first, then sync back over.

If you have a single Shopify location:

  • Go to Settings in Shopify and select Shipping. The Shipping Origin is the address that imports to Shippo.
Note: This may be different from the store address used for Shopify billing, which is listed under General settings.

If you have multiple Shopify locations:

Go to Settings in Shopify and select Locations. You can modify each address here. Need help? See Shopify's Help Center.

Allow up to five minutes for address changes to update, then re-sync to Shippo by clicking Sync Orders at the top of the Orders Page. This updates your Shopify location info on the Addresses Page.

Note: A Shopify icon on the Shippo Addresses Page marks addresses imported from Shopify. Addresses entered manually in Shippo won't have this icon.

Update the name, company, and email address

You can't edit a read-only Shopify address in Shippo, but you can update the Name, Company, and Email Address fields for any imported location.

  1. Open the Settings tab from the dashboard and select Addresses.
  2. Click the Edit link to the right of the location.
  3. Update the Name, Company, and Email Address details.
  4. Click Save.

You can also set your default sender and return addresses from this same page.

Split shipments for multi-location orders

If a Shopify order has more than one fulfillment location, we automatically split it into separate shipments when it syncs to Shippo, with a separate label for each location. From the order, you can select which label you'd like to edit at the top of the page.

This is available to any Shippo merchant who connected their Shopify store after April 5, 2022. If you connected before that date, this feature rolls out to your account shortly after.

There's nothing you need to do to turn this on. Orders with more than one fulfillment location split automatically once your account is eligible.

Troubleshooting fulfillment

If your Shopify orders aren't being marked fulfilled automatically, start with the automatic fulfillment settings above to confirm everything's set up correctly. If they still aren't updating, check these four things:

1. All items in your Shopify inventory must be set to manual fulfillment

Every item in the order needs manual fulfillment in Shopify for us to update fulfillment and send the tracking number automatically. If even one item is set to automatic fulfillment, the whole order's fulfillment can't update automatically.

2. Your shipping label must use an imported Shopify location as the sender address

Shopify requires a Shopify Location as the sender address when you fulfill orders in Shippo. If you use a sender address that isn't an imported Shopify location, we won't be able to send the tracking number or fulfillment update back to Shopify for that order.

3. Inventory must be assigned to the location you use as your sender address

Every item in the order needs inventory assigned at the location you select as your sender address when you buy the label.

Note: Example: You sell red notebooks and blue pens. Notebooks are stocked at your California location, pens at your New York location. A customer orders one of each, and you buy the label using your California address. Because the blue pen has no inventory assigned to California, we won't be able to update fulfillment or send the tracking number to Shopify.

4. Orders with third-party fulfillment or drop shipping won't update automatically

Note: Example: A customer orders two T-shirts. You ship one yourself, but Printify fulfills the other. You create a Shippo label for just your T-shirt. Because part of the order was fulfilled by a third party, we won't be able to update fulfillment or send the tracking number to Shopify.
